Bright Shining Star at Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 20, 2011 – When Matt Bright found out that he was getting on Powder River Rodeo’s Show Boat at the championship round of the Caldwell Night Rodeo, he couldn’t stop smiling.

The Azle, Texas, resident got on his first horse here Friday night. He scored 83 points on Calgary Stampede’s Hurricane Terry to place in the round and qualify for Saturday night’s performance. He was part of a three-way tie for second place that included former world champion Will Lowe and Caine Riddle.

Bright was three points behind Bo Casper who won the first round. He easily closed the gap with an 86-point score. He earned the title and $5,179 here with a total score of 169 points. The final round win went to Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore., who had an 88 on Burch Rodeo’s Friendly Fire. Peebles finished one-point behind Bright for the title.

This win will be a big boost for Bright who is on track to qualify for his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). He is currently in 11th place in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. The money he won here will move him up in the standings and give him an even better opportunity to compete at rodeo’s championship event.

“I couldn’t be any more excited,” Bright said. “That horse was outstanding. Making the victory lap around this arena and hearing the fans last night made me really want to do it again. It’s just so much fun. I love riding bucking horses.”

After Bright made his victory lap on Friday, he promptly donated his $50 bonus back to the Caldwell Night Rodeo Military Relief Fund. He sustained a broken back at last year’s NFR and missed three months of competition that included some of rodeo’s highest paying events including rodeos in Denver, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

“I had some ground to make up when I came back,” he said. “This is sure going to help.”

Cody Wright’s quest for a third world championship was helped here when he won both the championship round and the title. He rode the Calgary Stampede horse, Luxurious Bubbles, for 87 points and the win. His total of 166 points added $4,791 to his season earnings. He is currently leading the world standings and will increase his lead with the win here.

Nancy Hunter from Neola, Utah, left here as the champion in 2010 and again in 2011. She has won over $12,000 here in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race in less than two minutes. She made three runs here this year in 52.56 seconds and won $5,120.

Total payout at this year’s rodeo was $248,935.

Casper Looks for Caldwell Payday

CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 18, 2011 – Bo Casper has been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for nine years and while he has been one of the top bareback riders in the industry, he has yet to join the elite group that qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

He is hoping that 2011 will change that. And, while he isn’t among the top 15 right now, he made a big move at the third performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo that could improve his position. Casper rode the Calgary Stampede horse named Rum Flavored for 88 points to take the lead in the first round of competition. He is likely to get a good check out of that round and will be back here on Saturday night for the championship round.

“What a blessing this is for me,” Casper said. “That horse was outstanding and that could be one of the most fun rides I’ve ever had in my career.”

Casper’s season started off well when he won over $12,000 at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver in January. He continued adding to his check book until a horse stepped on him at the Ram National Circuit Finals in March. A broken leg kept him away from the rodeo arena until May 28th so he has had a little ground to make up. In spite of the injury and being unable to compete, he is still 20th in the world standings.

Last year’s bareback champion here won over $5,000. That wouldn’t be enough to move Casper into the top 15, but it sure would help. He needs to add at least $11,000 to his earnings to have a shot at a world championship at the NFR in December. There are still some big rodeos left in the 2011 season so he definitely has an opportunity.

Rodeo competition continues here on Friday with the fourth performance beginning at 8 p.m. Preliminary round winners and championship round qualifiers will be determined at that time.

South Dakota Cowboy Lights Up Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 17, 2011 – Sometimes when things aren’t good, it pays to take a step back, re-evaluate and get back to basics.

Just ask bull rider Corey Maier from Timber Lake, S.D. He hasn’t won much money in the last month and in fact hasn’t been lasting the required eight seconds to even have a successful ride. So, before he got to the Caldwell Night Rodeo, he decided it didn’t matter what bull he got on, he was just going to get down to basics, ride for eight seconds and spur to get points.

That game plan came together at the second performance here when Maier rode the D & H Cattle Company bull named Marmaduke for 90 points. He now leads the first round and is a shoe-in for a top spot in Saturday night’s championship round.

“I had no idea what that bull was until last night,” Maier said. “I told myself that I didn’t care what he did, I was going to give it all I got.”

Maier is from a rodeo family full of tough bull riders. His older brother Ardie qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December and would have been here if not for a broken back that he sustained at Cheyenne Frontier Days in July. They also have a third brother Rorey who competes.

Any money that Corey wins here will help him in his quest to qualify for the rodeo’s championship event. While he isn’t in the top 50 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s (PRCA) World Standings, winning a championship here would give him a good boost.

His ride on Wednesday night was the first time in his career that he had ever posted a 90-point effort since he joined the PRCA in 2005. After a few weeks of not being on his game, he got a big confidence boost as well.

“I needed this,” Maier said. “Hearing that crowd and getting 90 points was great. I try to stay really positive all the time, but this sure will help.”

And, he’ll have good news when he calls his brother who is home heeling up and hoping to join Corey on the rodeo trail in September.

Rodeo competition continues here on Thursday with the third performance beginning at 8 p.m.

Local Bull Rider Has CNR Fans on Their Feet

CALDWELL, Idaho --Aug. 16, 2011 – Injuries have plagued bull rider Kyle Joslin for the past four years enough that many would question his comeback to the sport he loves.

For the Caldwell, Idaho resident it wasn’t if he would come back but when. He broke his neck in 2007 and had two subsequent surgeries for that. His most recent surgery was just seven months ago and it was his fourth shoulder surgery. After rehabilitation and a gritty determination, he’s back and made it well known here that he’s here to ride.

During the first performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Joslin was the only bull rider out of the 20-man field to last the full eight seconds. His ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Wild Child had the Civies and the Rowdies on their feet and earned him a whopping 88-point score.

“Everybody told me how good he (Wild Child) was,” Joslin said. “My daughter’s here and my family and it gave me that extra go tonight. I wasn’t really worried about bucking off, I was just going to make sure I got to that whistle.”

There are three more performances here before Saturday night’s championship round, but with Joslin’s 88-point ride he is almost assured a chance to win a title at his home town rodeo. The 12 contestants with the highest scores in bull riding will advance.

In the saddle bronc riding it was Taos Muncy who stole the show. Muncy also had an 88-point ride to give him the early lead. It was the horse named Knight Rocket from Calgary Stampede that helped the Corona, N.M., resident earn the big score of the night. Muncy also has local ties to the area. His wife Marissa is from Meridian and the couple just welcomed a new baby girl into their family one week ago.

Muncy is currently ranked second in the world standings behind reigning world champion Cody Wright from Milford, Utah. Muncy will be making plans to back here Saturday night to ride for the championship and hoping to narrow the gap between he and Wright.

Rodeo competition continues here on Wednesday with the second performance beginning at 8 p.m.
